Q: What is Ghost or Phantom Power and How can I stop paying for it

What is phantom power also known as ghost power?

Though it's known by a laundry list of names phantom power, all describes the same thing: it sucks extra energy when you aren't looking and you don't need it. Most of us have been unconcerned about our gadgets, electronic devices and appliances and those little lights that we see on the items that secure us that the devise is plugged in and working, this means it is drawing power even when they're switched off or not in use, it may seem trivial, however it can add up over time. All together, phantom energy can account for about 10 percent of an individual home's electricity use. Many items among the list are chargers for cell phones, digital cameras, power tools and other gadgets all draw energy even when they're not in use. Appliances like televisions, computer monitors, and DVD players can also draw power whenever they're plugged into an outlet.

Taking action, unplug your devices when they aren't use, this will cut back on phantom power, but it can be a hassle to crawl behind the TV every time you're done watching. There is an easier solution and it’s quite simple, plug bundled devices such as TV, DVD player, and DVR, or computer, monitor, and printers into the same power strip and then turning off the power strip will do the job. You can even put your power strips on a timer so you don’t forget.

There are a handful of devices designed specifically to combat phantom energy. You may also calculate your energy cost with a cost calculator by viewing  http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/technologies/eep_eccalculators.html

When buying new electronics, buy energy-efficient appliances bearing the Energy Star label, they will suck less energy. View http://www.energystar.gov/ and http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/ at the U.S. Department of Energy for a list of products, and check back for more tips.

Q: I have constant mold in my bathroom, what can I do?

A: It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust. The mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors. If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem. If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.

Try installing a timer on your bathroom fan, run the fan for 15 min after every bath and shower. This will help dry the room and change the environment from moist to dry. Creating a healthy place for you and your family.

Q: Ice Dams, What are they? What should you do about them?

A: Ice Dams,  An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof.
